ITER site in early 2015

The ITER Organization is inviting interested companies to participate at the ITER Headquarters in this special event aimed at presenting the scope and the procurement program of the Assembly Division for the upcoming year.

UK delegates at the ITER Business Forum

UK companies descended on Marseille on 25^th-27^th March for the ITER Business Forum 2015 in the stately surroundings of the Palais du Pharo.

The conference hosted 875 delegates from 410 separate organisations from around the globe.  From the UK, 13 companies were in attendance, ranging from seasoned bidders to those attending for the first time. Following ongoing collaborative activity with UK Trade and Investment on big science opportunities, UKTI secured funds to pay for the attendance of 10 UK companies.

This ITER Business Forum was the first for the newly appointed ITER Director-General, Bernard Bigot, who delivered one of the opening plenaries. In the talk he set out his seven-point action plan to see ITER succeed. Delegates also heard updates from the domestic agencies and had the opportunity to catch up on the status of the project in parallel thematic sessions.

Overall the forum was a good opportunity for UK companies to network and catch up with ITER business. Richard Layne from Tessella, one of the British firms attending, said: “It has been a useful opportunity to keep up to date with the ITER project and upcoming opportunities – also to talk and keep in touch with relevant people.”

Training session for F4E staff at TWI

When engineers from Fusion for Energy in Barcelona needed training in non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, they looked to Cambridgeshire-based company TWI for a helping hand.

TWI is a research and technology organisation specialising in joining, integrity management and materials technologies. It also delivers training and certification, and is the world’s largest provider of training in welding, welding inspection and non-destructive testing.

So it was no surprise that F4E approached TWI in search of training that would provide its personnel with a better understanding of some of the issues associated with advanced NDT inspection for the ITER fusion project.

Fourteen F4E staff came to TWI’s Great Abington headquarters in February for a four-day training workshop covering advanced NDT techniques. The bespoke course covered a broad range of NDT-related topics, including typical welding process faults, NDT procedure and report requirements, relevant standards, validation processes and personnel certification.

Marcello Consonni, Principal Project Leader at TWI, said:
